phatback is a blend of jazz, funk, soul, hip hop, gospel, blues, rock and rhythm and blues. a pure blend.
the foundation is Jamil the black market. piano and keys, lyrics, vocals and emcee. it is the piano / keys in which the foundation of phatback lives. no bass player, just bass notes. jazz and gospel chords with soul and blues progressions.
the pulse is Nate "deep pocket" Keith, the UMPH, on drums. (i dont think even he knows that i call him, the UMPH. or deep pocket. lol) he is just plain talented and naturally musical and rhythmic. if you like the rain, he is the thunder in the storm. if you like life, he is the beat of the heart. The UMPH is that nasty, funky, vicious and ridiculous sick foot every band wants. Nate Keith gives PHATBACK the essence of funk and grooves that we all love.
the emotion is channeled through Andrew "whatup" Alcarese, on guitar. blues guitar with elements of jazz and folk and country and rock. andrew is also the glue that holds this band together, the heart that beats in all of us. His soul comes out in his music and both are marvelous to behold.
